Listen to the Message

Genesis 25:19-34

"What good is my birthright to me right now? I'm on the verge of starvation."

We're always making choices, but we're not always choosing well.

What a bad decision. What a bad choice.

1. Choose like it really is your responsibility.
  • Determinism versus Choice.
  • Predestination verses Free Will.
  • Your choices are you own, so be ready to own them.
  • I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live. (Deuteronomy 30:19 KJV)
  • Your decisions matter.
  • Your life is a result of the choices you make.
  • The strongest principle of growth lies in human choice.
2. Choose like the outcome is, as yet, undetermined.
  • Sometimes we go through life making decisions as if there were no such thing as consequences.
  • Never weigh a choice lightly, never make a decision lightly.
  • Make sure the choices you make are taking you where you want to go.
3. Choose according to what matters most, not merely what matters this minute.
  • But what about our own in-the-moment decisions?
  • Do this too many times and you miss out on your father's blessing.
  • Your children, not your hobbies, are your top priority.
  • Is this a temporary situation, or a permanent priority?
  • Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. (Colossians 3:2 ESV)
  • • Never make a decision when you’re hungry.
  • • Never make a decision when you’re pressured to make a decision too soon.
  • • Never make a decision without getting outside input.
  • Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. (Proverbs 15:22)
  • God loves each one of them.
  • It's up to you to make the best choices you can make.
  • You can choose to be chosen.
  • "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve...But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." (Joshua 24:15)
  • The quality of your life isn't determined by the breaks you get, it's determined by the choices you make.
