The Eve of Destruction

Matthew 16:2-3 NIV, 2 Timothy 3:1-5 NIV

“When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times” (Matthew 16:2-3 (NIV).

“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people” (2 Timothy 3:1-5 (NIV).

Signs of the Times:

Rioting in cities across the United States.

Cries to defund the police or abolish them all together.

Anarchy in Seattle -- Mayor has surrender a seven block area to activists who have declared it an independent nation called “CHAZ”—Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone.

Discrimination and persecution against churches.

So what can we do as individual believers?

1) Repent: Let Daniel be our model.

“I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: ‘Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned away from your commands and laws’” (Daniel 9:3-5).

2) Intercede:

At its roots this conflict is spiritual, a clash between light and darkness, between good and evil. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).
3) Regeneration:

Since our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against evil our only hope is a spiritual solution—regeneration. We must be transformed. We must be born again. Jesus said that which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit (see Jn. 3:6). Only God can eradicate the evil that lives in our hearts. Only God deliver us from racism that is tearing our country apart. Only God can deliver us from the violence that is destroying our cities. Only God can make us one people in Christ Jesus.  In Christ “There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28 NLT).

4) Reformation:

Reformation must be added to repentance, intercession, and regeneration for lasting change.

What regeneration does for human nature, reformation does for the policies and institutions that govern our nation—it redeems them.
